Sports News Updates: Clijsters struggling to be fit for U.S. Open

Kim Clijsters(BBC News Blog) – Kim Clijsters will undergo a scan on the injured leg Monday in the countdown to his title defense at the U.S. Open next week in New York.

The Belgian ace was injured during his loss to Vera Zvonareva in Montreal last week, prompting speculation that she would be unable to play in the final slam of the season.

Closely tied, lost nine consecutive games to Zvonareva in their quarterfinal clash taking the first set.

It was his second straight defeat of Russia, who knocked out of Wimbledon in the quarter-final stage.

Clijsters is known for its ability to fight and has fought all the way into Canada despite the injury.

“I hate to give up,” said Clijsters official site of the WTA.

“If something really bad happens, if you twist your ankle. But I was still able to move, being able to hit the ball, so I do not believe in giving up. ”

The Montreal tournament is yet to be done after two days affected by rain, with Zvonareva still play their semi-final against Victoria Azarenka.

Caroline Wozniacki be played on 11 Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the other last-four clash on Monday.

Wozniacki was seeded at the U.S. Open after the withdrawal of world number one Serena Williams for a foot injury.

Clijsters is set to be the third seed to defend the title he won as exciting as last year in his return to tennis – should suffer no reaction to his injury.

Reports Monday in the Belgian media said the former world number one hopes to play in the grand final Slam of the year, despite the scan to check for more severe muscle damage.

“I have no doubt about my participation in the U.S. Open,” AFP quoted Clijsters in the reports.

“I probably have some strapping on my leg, but that does not mean I will not be fully fit.”
