Sports News Updates: Cubs Manager Lou Piniella says that retiring after Sunday’s game

Lou PiniellaCHICAGO (BBC News Blog) – Cubs manager Lou Piniella will leave office after Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves for you to spend more time with his family.

The 66-year-old Piniella made the announcement in a statement delivered by the team. Third base coach Mike Quade was promoted to interim coach.

Piniella said last month that he planned to retire at the end of the season and only on Saturday reiterated its plans. But he missed four games in August to be with his ailing mother in Florida and it seems he felt he needed to spend more time with her.

“I need to be at home,” Piniella said before Saturday’s 5-4 victory over Atlanta. “My circumstances have changed a heck of a lot last year, especially during the last month or so. I just need to be home.
“I’m worried about my mom. I love baseball, but I love my family. When talking about his family, which is a bit more important than baseball, is much more important. ”

Entering Sunday’s game, Piniella was general record of 1.835 to 1.712 (0.517). He just behind Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre in wins among active managers.

Register Piniella was 316-292 with the Cubs. Under the relaxed standard, Chicago won consecutive NL Central title in 2007-08, but missed the playoffs last year and has struggled this season with a new incumbent in office.

In 18 years in the majors as a player and 22 more a manager, Piniella made five trips to the World Series and has three championship rings.

Piniella began managing in 1986 with the Yankees and lasted three years, including a stint as general manager. He managed the Reds from 1990-92, leading them to a World Series championship in his first season. He also drew national attention during his time there during a wrestling match with reliever Rob Dibble club, who played down the incident and said that “we have been family ever since.”

After Cincinnati, Piniella had a long career in Seattle, where his team won at least 90 games four times and 116 in 2001. The three-time manager of the year also spent three seasons with the Tampa Bay dugout.
